Overcoming Loneliness

“Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another-and all the more as you seethe Day approaching.”- Paul the Apostle; Hebrews 10:25

You were built to have relationships and be relational, period. God made you to be in a relationship with Him and to be in relationships with other people. When we deviate from this course, the effects are always negative and damaging. All of our efforts to substitute other material things or activities to replace healthy relationships only will leave us seeking out some other form of unhealthy relationship to replace them. Ultimately, without healthy relationships we wind up in a state of perpetual loneliness.

As the verse above states, we have to keep the habit of making relationships, even in a world that has grown less and less relational. Just as proper sleep, diet, and exercise are essential for a healthy life, so is the need to spend quality time with others. Here are a couple of quick tips for building healthy relationships and in turn overcoming loneliness:

1.) Make a personal commitment to being relational.
Make a commitment in your mind and spirit that relationships are important. As simple as this sounds, we are never going to put time and energy into something that we do not find important. If we are going to make relationships a priority again, is must start with the belief that they are important, and that our lives will be negatively impacted without them.

2.) Make TIME for relationships with your friends and family.
Where you spend your time determines what you value and find important. If we are going to have quality relationships we must put the first part of our time towards them, not just what life leaves us as leftover after everything else. Make a relationship “budget” with your time during every week. Take certain parts of everyday, and certain days of the month and designate them for building quality relationships.

3.) Join a local church.
Join a church or local group of like-minded people to have a good practical foundation for healthy relationships. A good church is going to be essential in finding people of faith with whom to begin to build quality relationships. Good churches often also have specific groups that meet together weekly for people that share similar interests. Try LookforaChurch.com

4.) Grow closer in your relationship with God.
Building a quality relationship with God is going to be the most important.Foundation you can have for learning to have quality relationships. As we walk every day in spiritual communion with God, He will help us grow in all aspects of building and maintaining healthy relationships.

There is no shortcut for overcoming loneliness. The only answer is to seek a relationship with God,and pursue healthy relationships with those around us.
